Dental Implant Benefits

Dental implants are a great option for replacing missing teeth, improving chewing ability, eliminating bridges, and replacing dentures. In addition, several implants may provide a base for a series of artificial teeth known as a fixed bridge. Implants can even be used to secure a full set of removable dentures for people who have no remaining natural teeth.

Implant

Permanent

Permanently mounted to your jaw, a dental implant replaces the crown and root of a missing tooth.

Implant

Replaces Teeth

Replacing a single tooth root with a dental implant gives your new crown a positive foundation and retains bone health.

Same Care

Tooth care is exactly the same with a dental implant as it is with a natural tooth. Just brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash.

Relax During the Implant Procedure with Sedation

Sedation dentistry with Dr. Shumate allows his patients to relax while undergoing restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. In addition, dental sedation enables patients to overcome anxiety from discomfort up to phobia about even visiting the dentist. Plus, sedation allows you to group various procedures into a single visit and have little or no recollection of the procedure.

Two Types Of Dental Sedation

IV Sedation

IV sedation is ideal for moderate dental anxiety, general aversion to the dental office, or a sensitive gag reflex. With IV sedation, Dr. Shumate will set up an IV drip which will keep you continuously sedated during your treatment. As a result, you will be asleep during the entire procedure but retain all normal reflexes and breathing throughout the treatment. Because this type of sedation doesn’t wear off immediately, it’s important to arrange a ride home from your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a clear, odorless gas inhaled before and during the procedure, leaving you feeling calm and even euphoric. However, the effects dissipate quickly once the gas is off, so you’re ready to resume regular daily activity.

With nitrous oxide or “laughing gas”, a mask is placed over your face, allowing you to breathe a mixture of oxygen and gas, relaxing you for the procedure. The effects wear off quickly, so you can drive yourself home after you’re finished.

Implant-Supported Dentures Can Restore Your Confidence

Suppose you’re missing all of your teeth due to an oral condition, or injury. In that case, you may want to consider implant-supported dentures placed by Dr. Dana Shumate. Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Shumate and the Porters Neck Cosmetic & Family Dentistry team want you to feel at home. So while we are happy to answer questions you may have during the consultation, here are answers to a few commonly asked questions about implants.

Dental implants consist of a titanium screw (that acts as a tooth root) and a lifelike crown. Implants integrate with the bone to form a solid and stable connection for about four to six months, after which we permanently attach the appropriate implant restoration.
Dental implants integrate with the jaw just like tooth roots, preserve jawbone health, and closely replicate natural teeth in look, feel, and function. As a result, implants offer permanent, comfortable, and highly stable tooth replacement.
Dr. Dana Shumate uses 3D imaging to plan the exact position of your dental implants and utilizes guided implant surgery to precisely insert implants within the jaw bone. These techniques create a minimally-invasive procedure, but we offer sedation dentistry, among other options, to ensure your comfort during your implant visit.
Accuracy in dental implant placement is paramount because of the vital structures throughout the head and neck. That’s why Dr. Dana Shumate has invested in the newest technology that gives us the exclusive ability to diagnose and plan your dental implants accurately. Our cone beam scanner allows us to scan and design your dental implant before beginning the procedure. Then, with our safe, high-tech approach to implant dentistry, your implant can be placed into the precise position easily and quickly.
Even if you have jawbone loss, you may still be a candidate for dental implants. Dr. Shumate is highly skilled at repairing lost bone and preparing the jaw for implant success with advanced bone grafting techniques.
Dental implants can replace any number of missing teeth, from one to an entire arch. But just because you have multiple missing teeth does not necessarily mean you need an implant for each missing tooth. We can replace an entire arch of missing teeth with only four to six implants and then attach a full arch prosthetic or two to six implants to secure your dentures.
The cost of dental implants in Wilmington, NC, varies depending on several factors, including the number of teeth placed, the need for tooth extractions or bone grafting, the type of implant procedure, and overall oral health. A consultation with our team can determine what your personal implant cost might be.
At Porters Neck Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, our staff will work with you to see if your insurance company will cover the dental implant procedure. If for any reason it’s not covered, we can assist with finding the right financing options for you. Our patients often tell us that it’s completely worth the investment of their time and money to permanently replace their missing teeth with dental implants.
In general, dental implants take about four to six months to fully heal and fuse with the bone. However, the timeframe from beginning the implant process to final restoration depends on whether you need bone grafting, other preparatory procedures, and the type and number of implants you need.
Dental implants are cared for exactly like natural teeth. Proper brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings typically are all that is necessary to maintain your dental implants.
For most patients 45 years or older, a dental implant will last for life. So the implant itself won’t typically need replacement. Still, the crown or cap placed on the appliance may require restoration or replacement every 10-15 years.
Implant patients are of all ages and could be an excellent solution for anyone missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease, or decay. In addition, they are convenient for patients who can no longer wear removable dentures. Dr. Shumate can determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants after carefully evaluating your dental and medical history.
